A finished sketch thing of Rouge by LunarMew A finished sketch thing of Rouge by LunarMew
Finishing up a drawing here while on a break from my school project. Mostly experimentation.

Tell me what you think of it. Don't worry about hurting my feelings if you don't like it, just please be honest. I want to know if the idea for coloring sketches this way works or not. =)

Rouge the Bat belongs to Sega
Artwork made by me

EDIT

Ok, I am having some trouble submitting this thing. (Damn it, deviantArt...)

WOW this is WAY better than the sketch!!!!! And she only has two elbows! As in, two total, not two on one arm! :XD:
How could you not know if this kind of coloring worked or not? Can't you see your own good taste?! This is great!

I like the eyes and how now the lipstick doesn't look out of place anymore. But I even like the shoes on this one. And the digital effects. I like this from head to toe.

Is there any possibility that you used lines from what used to be her extra elbow to help draw her right wing?...:giggle: No?

Well, yes. But only because I didn't want to get rid of the sketch part of the drawing. XD

Everything is done traditionally, for the most part, but I just used color correction, filter effects, and the dodge, burn tool to help the drawing not look too washed out.

Looks like it was done traditionally. That's really cool that you can pull that off with digital. Only thing I see that might be off...is her right thumb, on her hip, seems a little bit too far away from the rest of the fingers and such. Other then that, you still freaking rock

Yea, it looks detached and tiny in comparison to her other fingers. Thanks for pointing that out. =)

Like I always say...I LOVE the hell out of your coloring skills to the point where I envy it XD

I don't recommend envy. I was jealous of an artist on deviantArt once to the point where I attempted to copy her coloring style...which didn't work so I quickly gave up afterwards. Bummer. But still! It was wrong what I tried to do and I might have ended up leading a path to plagiarism and end up getting accused all the time. XD

Now don't think I am accusing you of mimicry, because it can happen unintentionally to everybody, from subconscious. It's kind of scary too. Not your fault is what I am trying to say, if it happened before or might happen later on. I recommend at least looking at multiple artworks of different artists so you can get the rough idea of color theory, without accidentally copying. So while I looked at the artwork of that artist who I mentioned above I also looked at works from other people and tried out many different tutorials. I also recently just started studying photographs more closely for this. Nothing is better practice than coloring from life itself. =)

That being said, did you ever take a look at this tutorial before?

Maybe you did but if not I recommend it. It is a good start if you want to mess with color and *purplekecleon knows what she is talking about. This tutorial is the only reason I got better in the first place.

Oh I'm sorry about that ^^; I guess I've been trying to get better with my coloring and all and I always look at other artist and how they color that to the point where I wish I could color that good.

I had somebody a few weeks ago say my art is garbage and that I'll never make it in the art world...which didn't make me think I was but you know what I mean.

I have saw some of PK's tutorials but not this one, but I'm gladly going to take that into consideration thank you :)

You sure you weren't just trolled? Unless the person told you why he/she thinks your art sucks...which often times they don't do. People aren't born with talent. We are just born kicking and screaming. XD Everything else is just a learning process and hard work. Never making into something is illogical if you are trying at getting your foot in the door of any type of industry. But I digress.

I'm not sure if it was trolling since the person who did it is somewhat a popular artist but he cookie cuts his drawings (He mimics some artist styles but says he's referencing)

Although mimicking an artist style isn't good for reference. Those are what studying photographs and life are for. To be fair, you can look at other artist's art styles but it isn't to use their artwork for reference, but rather inspiration and ideas that you wouldn't have thought of. I know what I just said sounds like referencing but it isn't, since you have to experiment with different styles you are inspired by other artworks to see what you get and are most comfortable with.

For example, I was mostly inspired by :iconpurplekecleon:'s and :icone09etm:'s artworks compared to other artists, but that doesn't mean my art style is the same as theirs. For example, (again) I love *purplekecleon's coloring, but I wouldn't be able to work with it comfortably because her art style is messy. I hate it when my artwork doesn't look clean, even if it is digital painting. As for ~E09ETM, If my digital painting had similar lineart to how she does it, I would go NUTS. There is no way in hell I am able to leave the lines that loosely transparent and messy without nitpicking the hell out of my drawing. Ether my lineart has to be concisely there or there shouldn't be a trace of lineart at all, just good values. Her character designs and coloring styles are awesome, though.

Again, it is what you are comfortable with. While inspiration from other artist's coloring style is nice, it isn't good to limit yourself to that. Just practice and experiment a lot. That is what is going to get you a coloring style that you like. Heck, I think I am closer to being comfortable with my style. I used to hate my coloring a lot before. ;)

Can't really point out any flaws here, since the artwork looks good, and some of the elements you put into the picture seems intentionally the way you want it. It looks good, I like the anatomy/pose.
